Delivering capacity

Capacity is the ability of charities or voluntary organizations to fulfill their missions and mandates.

We think of capacity in two broad categories:

  • Core capacity: all of the administrative, infrastructure and financial services essential to any organization
  • Program capacity: the knowledge, human and capital resources necessary to deliver effective programs

Charitable organizations in Canada are facing mounting pressure to demonstrate that they are accountable to their members, their funders and regulators. At the same time, most are faced with decreasing funding and increasing demands on their programs.

Most mission-driven organizations respond to such a situation by reducing core capacity and delivering more services with fewer staff. Ultimately, this requires program staff to spend time performing management and administrative functions for which they may be poorly trained.

Glasshouse has gathered together the experienced personnel necessary to offer a variety of services in the Greater Vancouver area. Delivering these services to charities allows them to concentrate more fully on their missions:

  • Human resources
  • Information management
  • Information technology
  • Communications
  • Organizational development
  • Board governance
  • Fundraising
  • General management

Glasshouse services

Glasshouse services are provided through three basic delivery models: shared-staff, onsite staff and consultants. The three models are described below:

Shared-staff model

The shared-staff model allows small charities to access precisely the number of hours of expert staff time they need, to perform a variety of core administrative and financial functions.

We offer shared-staff at rates below market because we negotiate favourable rates with our service providers. We save our clients the time and challenges associated with recruitment and training for these functions. Clients gain from the charity expertise that they might not otherwise be able to afford and from the stability and consistency offered by our services.

Shared-staff contracts offer the opportunity to implement best practices models in information management and financial reporting, which are critical to accountability. They will provide an entry point for the introduction of capacity assessments and additional Glasshouse resources.

On-site model

As the capacity of our clients grows, we expect to encounter situations where full-time staff is required either temporarily or permanently. Temporary placements are filled with Glasshouse staff members, and for permanent placements, we offer recruitment and training services so as to ensure that the value of our best practices model is passed on to new staff.

Consultants

Glasshouse consultants bring a wide variety of skills in diverse aspects of capacity, including legal, management, human resources, financial, fundraising, information technology, communications and government relations.
